It feels like now would be really good time to decentralise/distribute the grid, to me. Not that I know anything about the technical challenges thereof, I'm just seeing some similarities to the challenges that are overcome by distributed networks like the Internet, and also some parallels with re-localising political power to councils and mayors. It feels like the fewer large concentrated points of failure, the better. Increased house or estate level battery storage seems like it would fit well into that, hopefully.
Presumably that would reduce the hazard from the intermittency challenges you mention too.
