The katahdin hair sheep have water all winter from free flowing springs.

The winter water situation for our sheep has gotten really passive over the years. We used to have to haul water to them daily and break out the ice from the trough. Eventually we realized if we just put the winter paddock around one of the free flowing springs the sheep will have access to water without us having to do anything.

Here the sheep are actually drinking out of one one the newer swales but at the tree line I'm the back of the paddock there is also a stream fed by a spring from the neighbors property. Pretty wild that we are both at the top of the water shed in the area and somehow there is still water bubbling up out of the ground year round. Not sure how it's possible...

Sheep gorging on a fresh bale of hay.

The sheep are all together again after being separated into thier breeding groups for a few weeks. Now they will work at abusing this area of poor pasture together until they start rotationally grazing again in April. I tried to get the pasture beat back into shape last winter too but it needed a second winter to finish the job. Rush grass is hard to deal with passively but I think this low time preference approach will eventually take care of it.

I took a break from posting the goings on around the homestead to focus more on the holiday season and family. It's amazing how much background mental energy goes into sharing the homestead lifestyle through Nostr on a daily basis. I've got some catching up to do but for now, I'll start the year off with sheep updates.
