The GIFs are created if you upload a regular video with the sound removed. I’m often removing the sound because there’s too much wind buffeting or other unwanted sound.
And apparently Mastodon then converts those to GIFs automatically when I upload them.
I’m sure it saves server space to do it that way.
But no, I’m not doing anything clever myself!
