Here's the most unusual bird I saw at last week's field trip to the Boyle River in the Southern Alps, NZ
It's a house sparrow.
I've been teaching our ecology field trip at the Boyle for 13 years now and this is just the 4th house sparrow I've ever seen here.
For a smart and adaptable bird that is so abundant in NZ's cities and towns, house sparrows really don't know how to live in NZ's native grasslands and forests. It still surprises me.
