Yeah I think some operators do that. There was never a guarantee of data permanence. There are so many options now if people do want to preserve data (premium relays, multiple relays can diversify where the data lives, self hosted relay being the most reliable option).
There may be some important posts that may be preserved but yeah majority of “in the moment” stuff.
