It was honestly larger than I expected: a 6 sts seed border felt like not enough for the pattern to shine, in my mind, so I decided on 8, which made 16 total, and then 24 of the stockinette made a nice round 40 sts total.
It would make a nice hotpad or trivet, though I'd hate to get it stained with tomato sauce or such, and I haven't tested to see how heat resistant husky fur is!
I'll probably hang on to it and frog it if I need it, as you said! It was a surprise to me to calculate that this took 50 yd of yarn all on its own.
A lot of what I've been learning lately is getting a feeling for numbers I see fiber arts people talking about online in the real world. I now have context for things like stitches per inch!
