#TheSmiths were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1982, widely regarded as one of the most influential acts of the 1980s alternative scene. The lineup consisted of Morrissey (vocals), Johnny Marr (guitar), Andy Rourke (bass), and Mike Joyce (drums). Emerging from the post-punk landscape, they blended jangly guitar pop with Morrissey’s witty, melancholic lyrics, tackling themes of alienation, longing, and social critique.

"How Soon Is Now?" is one of The Smiths’ most iconic tracks, released as a single in January 1985. The song features Marr’s signature tremolo-drenched guitar riff—created by layering multiple takes through a Fender Twin Reverb amp. Morrissey’s lyrics, inspired by a line from George Eliot’s Middlemarch ("To be born the son of a Middlemarch manufacturer, and inevitable heir to nothing in particular"), paint a raw portrait of loneliness and unfulfilled desire. This is the extended version clocking in at 6:43 with many alternative music magazines ranking it one of the most influential songs of all time.
