Based on what I can figure out, the benefit of this may just be consistency at higher levels of difficulty? Like, on average the required time scales linearly with the difficulty, but the range of different possible times is broader the higher you go. So solving many easier challenges takes the same amount of time as solving one equivalent challenge _on average_, but the one difficult one is more likely to take a lot more or less time than the average.
