One good application of expert systems would be clothes design. Scan the torso, compute the volumes and displacements, iterate over the effing thing until it stops hurting.
Howard Hughes made several attempts to build a better brassiere. Jane Russell, for whom he designed them, said “[But] when I went into the dressing room with my wardrobe girl and tried it on, I found it uncomfortable and ridiculous. Believe me, he could design planes, but a Mr. Playtex, he wasn’t.”
