Since many of us spend far too much time firing off texts, emails and chats, we might assume that saving a few seconds by using shorthand – think “thx,” “k” and “plz” – is no big deal. But David Fang, who researches how people interact with technology, found otherwise.
In study after study, Fang and his colleagues found that fully spelling out words when texting can strengthen connections. Whether it was wooing someone on Tinder, asking for advice on Discord or messaging with friends and family, clipped messages and truncated text made the sender seem less sincere. Conversations were more likely to stall; budding relationships were more likely to wither.
“We’re not campaigning to ban ‘lol,’” Fang writes. But “if your ultimate goal is to nurture a deeper connection – be it with a friend, a sibling or a prospective date – taking an extra second to type ‘thanks’ might be a wise investment.”
