Arachnophobes, try this, it bloody works.
I'm not afraid of spiders the way that some folk are - like, I'll tolerate them, I'm sort of a middling-relationship-with-spiders sort of bloke, I'll have one or two in the house but more than that get gently moved outside, I won't freak out at them or try to kill them but I don't wanna empty a bucket of them over my head.
Anyway I found out last month that the Old English word for spider is "wæfer-ganges," meaning Walker-Weaver. Since then, my seven-year-old reminds us periodically (like, whenever she sees a walker-weaver) to call them walker-weavers and damn, yeah, that works.
I opened my mailbox and this massive fluffy black walker-weaver stared back at me, like it was big enough that I could see its two biggest eyes, and it just kinda looked up at me and then turned jerkily away 180 degrees, then turned back again all "is he still there" and turned away again and instead of going "UNEXPECTED SPIDER FFS" and jumping back, my head went "Walker-weaver" and, like... yup, it's walking, it's weaving, that's the walker-weaver's whole deal. Weave on, little walker-weaver.
"Spider" is legit a scary word, it sounds like something that'll spide you if you're not careful and I dunno what that is but I don't want it, "Walker-Weaver" is just, like, a job description
