There are plenty of solutions to just 𝑎²+𝑏²=…=𝑀² -- the tricky thing is getting those extra two conditions to hold as well.

(Solving the equations without the extra two conditions basically comes down to finding numbers with "enough" factors in the so-called Gaussian integers, things of the form a + ib where i^2 = -1. Any time you have (𝑎+𝑖𝑏)(𝑎−𝑖𝑏)=𝑀² you also have 𝑎²+𝑏²=𝑀² . It's possible to get many many such factors, i.e., for that circle to have lots of rational points on it. But it's more difficult when we have the extra constraints relating those different (a,b) pairs.)
