He's been in protective custody pending his extradition hearings because the British and American governments thought he was a risk of absconding to Russia like Snowdon.
It was not a "sentence" - he's never been on trial for anything, or found guilty of anything.
Until he decided to throw in the towel and admit guilt in this plea deal.

Of course I don't agree with how he's been treated, ther was no need for prison, he could have been kept under a curfew.
