Good news, I took the old ThinkPad x131e ex-chromebook to bits AGAIN and reseated the keyboard ribbon cable. All weird behaviour is gone at least for the moment.
I've also upgraded to Linux Kernel 6.4.0 for no particular reason.
This old thing is my personal daily driver for some reason right now. I'll probably go back to my 2015 MacBook Air if/when I figure out the Wi-Fi gremlins, but I am rather fond of the little ThinkPad...
