I've been backing off on weights due to back pain and stiffness, but after a couple weeks of light sets without improvement, said fuck it and went back to full weight and took my squats even deeper.

Maybe it's the endorphins and adrenaline, but the back pain is gone. Rest isn't always the best solution I suspect. Maybe it let some muscular imbalance form.

What's your experience with pain, rest, and cycling?
