As one of the painfully few non-Australians who occasionally gets a hankering for Vegemite, and having allowed people I had warned - often dramatically - to taste it and then observed as they decided that it is just one big mean practical joke, I’d say that this quote is an indication of a gross national delusion on unprecedented scale:
