When I do respond, it is almost always additive. If the commenter posed a question about a topic I don't think they fully understand, I can try figure out the source and address that directly. It tests my own understanding and helps me find good resources that more clearly explain relevant aspects of the topic.
In the process, I often realize the question or feedback is more valuable than I first realized. Assuming corrected understanding, a rephrased question often still applies.
