I've heard a few folk say this now, so as a privileged white man, I'm going to put my name to the suggestion that mastodon should allow users to post publicly but restrict replies.
This will help to enable voices who have far more problems with unhelpful and abusive users than I ever will to feel safe to share their experiences and their knowledge. Because how the hell are the rest of us going to listen if we can't make a safe space for them to speak?
