If transphobes actually believed that gender was a rigid binary then no one could "lose their man card". No one could lose their femininity by cutting their hair short. No one could have their masculinity questioned for crying. It would mean that gender would simply *be*, it by definition couldn't have sets of qualities that can increase or decrease or be judged insufficient. If someone's gender is something they can be more or less of or do right or wrong it's on a spectrum.

What transphobes actually believe is that they have the right to determine the gender of those around them. They aren't making honest claims about what they believe to be literally true, they're trying to enforce an order of control and domination.

The anti-trans hysteria isn't about whether or not gender is binary or biological or whatever, it's about who gets to do the gendering.
