Rep. William McKinley owned a Bloomington streetcar line that refused to recognize unions. Workers on strike called in Mother Jones, 80 (Pray for the dead, and fight like hell for the living). Her fired up 1917 rally attendees shut down the city power supply. Armed troops were then sent in to camp out downtown.
So shop workers marched to City Hall in solidarity, and refused to work until strikers got mediation. McKinley finally telegraphed: “I recognize the right of men to organize. #LaborDay
