Regarding Europe's "free loading" on US military protection:
After WW2, during the Cold War, Sweden, like so many other countries, was about to develop their own nuclear deterrent.
The US asked us, and others, to stop and instead rely on the US nuclear umbrella. This was because the US saw dangers in every European country having their own nuclear weapons, but also that the US saw its chance to benefit from the influence it could get if they provided security for all.
