The summit, first held in a 10-member format, attracts leaders from the Global South and East. Started in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, South Africa joined in 2011 while on Jan 1, 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates became full members.
