We bought a 2 ring electric worktop hob, a free standing thing as it is less likely that stuff would be put on it while it is still hot.
I am going to wire it into a fixed wall outlet, along with their worktop oven, and have a hidden switch that Mum can use and Dad doesn't need to know about.
That will save the risk of him waking up at 2am and going to cook dinner!
They also have a rice cooker and a microwave, both are slightly less of a fire risk at the moment.
