There is no getting off a local maximum without things getting worse.
We, for any scale of we you want to use, are leaving the local maximum created by the Carbon Binge. There are some options about how, but not any options about leaving.
Lots of people are reacting to this by going "well MY relative social status won't decrease" and demonstrating a willingness to do anything at all to make sure that's true. (Hence the current state of politics.)
