In my MK1 fanfic, Master Kai starts out as a mentor figure to Ashrah, but even as she begins to follow her own path (sometimes doing things Kai doesn't agree with), he becomes a father figure to her rather than an antagonistic.
In Book 3, Merle is someone Qinyang meets and who happens to share similar ideas. He's older, and so he imparts some of his knowledge. But he was never the "typical" mentor figure either, and their goals eventually clash.
