There's always been a reserve currency in some form. Going back a few thousand years. Before the US it was Britain. Spain, Portugal, Italy, Holland, etc. all had their turn. Rome and other empires had theirs.

There's a convenience in international trade plus the benefits to the issuing country. Mostly. For a time.

Coming up may be a BRICS basket form. May be more stable long term. Or not, depending on who decides to be king of the hill in the next competition of nations.

That's how I understand it. Not much more.
