TIL that the standard marathon distance of 42.195 km wasn't based on the route run by the messenger Pheidippides from Marathon to Athens in 490 BCE. Instead, it was established during the 1908 London Olympics to cover the distance from Windsor Castle to the royal box in the Olympic Stadium.
