right? the word is "wine-faced," it describes the appellant as having the "face" of wine. so the lustre, the body, the value (which is what the translation 'wine-dark' emphasizes), even the metaphorical associations of wine are all available as readings. but there's been so much brouhaha about hue!

oxen, the other 'wine-faced' thing in Homeric Greek, *also* aren't usually red-violet as such. they do exhibit reddish browns. and photos of the Mediterranean during certain lighting and weather conditions do, in fact, look reddish-brown
