So, I used to believe this, but I learned in my university coursework that it's somewhat of a myth. *All* decaying organic matter drops pH; conifers don't cause more of a drop than other plants (the greatest drop is actually from nitrogen fixers). Undecayed conifer needles are lower pH than broadleaf leaves, but the net impact from decay is the same.

The reason conifers are associated with acid soils is that they tend to be good at growing in acid soils.
