No matter how the sensor pixels are or aren’t grouped during capture, the advantage of capturing zoomed-in over capturing at 1x and cropping later is solely related to the multiple frames available to combine during capture when processing the zoomed image that are NOT available later when cropping a captured 1x image yourself.
