To be fair, they could have made third party apps a premium feature or could have provided a cheaper stripped down premium plan just for third party apps.
There are ways they could have tackled this issue, but instead they just force their official Reddit client onto everyone.
But I agree in general. If you don't own the infrastructure, you don't own the data.
