Product market mis-fit.
The capacity breakdown for American and European airlines (pre Covid) was heavily skewed in favor of business and first class. Chinese airlines were all about packing a plane full with economy seating.
Since business travel to China is now a crawl, it is no surprise that the global airlines are choosing to forgo adding flights and routes.
I can personally attest to this. There is only a single direct flight between Shanghai and New York. It is on Chinese Eastern and it flies only three times per week. That is insane to me.
