It depends, it feels like tech is moving more towards credentialism especially at medium-large companies. Just to get in the door you're fighting to get past the retarded HR resume filter, and the #1 thing they want is a college degree.
The other main hiring route for entry level is to get a summer internship (colleges help set those up) and then do a good job so they hire you after graduation. Again, that's a fair amount more difficult without college of some kind.
Tech is definitely still better than many other fields, but without a degree you really need to know your shit and be realistic about who is going to hire you. That or be a complete rockstar building some wildly successful open source project, or find a 0day in Chrome.
