My change is specifically grouping replies from your trusted network (your follows and their follows) so that they are shown on the top of the thread. Notes outside of that trusted network are shown on the bottom of the thread. You would not miss those replies, so there’s no need to worry about new users not being discovered. They’re just less prominent. Also, images and video from those who fall outside the trusted network are blurred by default anyway so there’s no accidental chance of seeing porn unless you decide to start tapping to reveal them.

Notifications remain unchanged — Damus users will continue to receive notifications from only their trusted network if they have the filter enabled.
