Crazy story. I didn’t know Air New Zealand completely closes their checkin desk an hour before departure. I arrived 57 minutes before departure and they were nowhere to be found.
I was worried I’d missed my flight, but I had an idea. If I could get to the gate they could print me a boarding pass and check my passport. Then I had a chicken and egg problem. If i was on the air side of security I’d be able to travel, but I couldn’t show my ticket that I didn’t yet have.
I quickly looked for and booked a miles flight a few hours using miles on American. I checked in and was able to go through security. They were wondering why i was going in to the wrong terminal, but let me through. I then cancelled the ticket I had already checked in on.
Once I got to the Air New Zealand gate for the Auckland flight they were happy to print my ticket. The only downside was i had to leave a knife i was given as a birthday present. The info desk said they’d turn it in at lost and found and i can have someone pick it up.
I’ve done the book a ticket, check in, go through security, and cancel it without flying a few times. Mostly to say goodbye at the gate or greet someone arriving at the gate. Just like you could when I was a kid. This is the first time I did it to catch a flight after check in closed.
Anyway, now I’ll be home tomorrow.
