The Nemi ships were two ships built by Emperor Caligula in 1st Century AD, on Lake Nemi. A small circular volcanic lake in the Alban Hills 30 km (19 mi) south of Rome. The larger ship was a floating palace which contained quantities of marble, mosaic floors, heating and plumbing, and amenities such as baths. Both ships featured technology thought to have been developed historically later. Re-discovered by divers in 1446, they were at the time too deep to recover from the lake bed. In 1929, on the command of Benito Mussolini, the lake was drained and the ships were recovered. The ships were then destroyed in 1944 by Allied Air Raids over Italy.
