Google is not lying about quantum in the same way the George W. Bush was not lying about WMD in Iraq. He would say things that were not legally actionable for people in the know but so misleading that the intent was clearly to deceive an ignorant American audience he knew very well would run with the inferences.
But the slogan "bush lied and people died" still holds. He knew there was no real evidence of the WMDs and knew that making large numbers of ignorant people believe there were would give him power. So he did the thing, got the power, and went out and killed all those people.
Google knows perfectly well a useful machine is decades away and that none of this has anything remotely to do with their business model. And they use the exact same kinds of weasel words as W used in Iraq.
But of course Google can count on a lazy, ignorant, and greedy press to amplify the most ludicrous possible interpretation of what they say, and they know that gives them more money and power.
Why?
Because capitalism is dying and being replaced by Investor Story Hour.
Which I believe creates opportunities for other alternatives to capitalism. I think we can replace Investor Story Hour with a culture of creating technology out of stories we tell each other, without any oligarch involvement at all.
I dream of a world where Google and Meta and Microsoft only exist in dusty history books. Physical books.
I think we can make that happen.
But I do not want to live the rest of my life in technology just watching liars blow bubbles all day.
This is fucking bullshit.
