...funny you say that, because I also picked up a 6ft copper ground rod that I'm going to hammer in right next to the pump and tie it to the ground. Would really suck some butt to lose it to lightning right after putting a new one in.
I have no idea what's wrong with the current one yet, just know it's old (says "1992", but it was installed in 2001 at the earliest, no other date on the pump).
