I started Mastodon instance a few years ago. It used to run on a Raspberry Pi in its early days.
It has now reached the point where I have to run it on a Linode machine with 16GB of RAM - and even there it sucks up 4GB of RAM, despite a very low local traffic. Network requirements are also way above the roof, and that's why I had to move it outside of my home network - it used to suck up all the bandwidth in my house.
Running a federated server on an open relay is no longer a task within reach for anybody with a Raspberry Pi sitting in a drawer, I guess.
