I hate it too; I think it's ridiculously complex, brittle, and overwrought compared to the simplicity of the sysv init, but it's getting harder and harder to find quarter in this battle. So... yeah, I eventually gave up and installed Debian. Fedora is... interesting, but it's just a bit too close to the stench that has become Red Hat for my tastes.
