Don't host stuff you care about on free stuff and be surprised it goes away. I will agree that notice should have been given but given the tone of this article it probably was but they didn't pay any attention.
Contabo don't force you to use their SSL certs, you can use your preferred system quite happily (source: I have two VPSs from them)
