Horror _movies_ do the trick for me: I scare easily and often when watching scary movies... just never with books.
This is probably why I don't really esteem Stephen King very much*: his books don't scare me and, absent that, what's there generally just doesn't click/inspire me. I've never really understood why people love him but now I think I do.
* His works at least. The man seems to be an extremely generous, decent person.
