There's a bot that tells you when you put up an image without text: but I almost never put up images, and it flagged when I boosted other people's posts with images without text, even though there's no way to add alt-text during a boost.
The basic Mastodon UI should simply ask you to enter alt-text whenever you attach an image.
For me, the chance to speak right to a non-sighted person with a tiny effort is just huge.
