It can be done but given we're still working on a timeline that spans to 50-100 years of zero emissions I doubt the will to do it without thinking it a waste of time and/or money a decade or two hangs over it.
These sorts of commitments are multi-generational in nature, they will last beyond our lifetimes and beyond that of every human alive today because they have to, without lengthy commitments there are no further generations to keep it going. It's not cheap no but this is the cost of a hundred years of emissions, low cost upfront but has a horrible interest rate.
