All fair examples. Mind you, when we were kids and the word emoticon was first coming into common use, my brother *did* initially pronounce it "emote-ICON", which sort of makes sense because of the "vowel sandwiched between two consonants, followed by a vowel" rule -- the same rule that means Linux should be pronounced l-eye-nux or Nokia should be pronounced no-kia (both of which are incorrect according to their creators).

I guess it's what you're used to. The very first time I saw the word "biopic", I pronounced it "BIOpic" in my mind. And so did my friends, when we started talking about them. It became natural. Only recently we've started hearing it pronounced as rhyming with myopic on the news, and it will forever sound foreign to our ears.

Having said that, my brother no longer pronounces emoticon emote-ICON, so maybe the myopic pronunciation will catch on.... ;)
