It's interesting that if you leave an abusive partnership, few people will tell you
"I'm sure he was doing his best"
or
"You should just forgive him, resentment is bad for you"
or
"I'm sure he was traumatized by his own childhood so you have to be compassionate."
We might be victim-blamed along the way, but most people will tell us that walking away is the right thing to do.
