Ms. FoC (Japanese) was not at all weirded out by the thought of putting wasabi in soy sauce when I ask her opinion. She said it was common, particularly for sashimi (as opposed to sushi that already has wasabi on it)
This is not to say that it is correct (indeed, Ms. FoC is not a sushi expert and could be wrong), but I don’t think it is shockingly deviant American behavior 😇
