Are you actually knitting as lefthanded? (worked/finished stitches are going onto the left hand needle.)
I ask because sometimes lefties think they are knitting left handed but are actually knitting right handed.
If you are really knitting lefthanded, then tutorials are always going to be a little confusing because you have to reverse all the moves in your brain.
I hope you don't mind if I throw this thought your way:
Since you are a brand new knitter, I say (as a leftie myself) it might be well worth your while to sit down with a knitter and start from the beginning, have them teach you in righthanded style. It'll make things easier forever for you.
You'll still be learning whichever method they use: continental style (holding the working yarn in left hand), or throwing/English style (holding the working yarn in right hand).
