The one that really shocked me recently was the cost of operating (properly and legally) as a builder in France! We have a good friend who's got his own building company, but it's only him. (I wouldn't call him a builder, he's a flippin artist, but that's another conversation.) He pays over €10,000 in insurance and (obligatory) guild memberships and so on. He doesn't actually earn that much either, and he has a truck and tools to pay for... He should charge more, mind you.
