Every year my mother plants dahlias in containers, where they can receive full sun and benefit from the radiated warmth off paved surfaces leading into her garage. All of her other dahlias have long since bloomed and withered, but this dahlia took its sweet time, flowering only now, in mid-October.

She has never had a dahlia take this long to bloom, but as you can see, it was worth the wait, providing a spectacular show at the very end of the season.
